Texture Talk: Incorporating Rich Textures in Home Design
HANNAH A · JUNE 6 2025
Texture isn’t just about how things feel—it’s about how they look like they might feel. A velvet chair, a hand-troweled limewash wall, a reclaimed wood beam—all of these invite touch and add richness. Especially in modern organic and Mediterranean-inspired homes, layering tactile elements creates warmth and authenticity that make a house feel like home.
Walls That Speak

From subtle limewash to bold plaster finishes, wall treatments are one of our favorite ways to add texture. A hand-applied Roman clay or microcement wall creates a soft, natural variation that can turn a blank surface into an artistic focal point. Bonus: these finishes play beautifully with natural light.
Contrasting Materials

Combining wood, stone, metal, and glass allows each element to shine. In kitchens, we might pair honed marble countertops with brushed brass fixtures and natural white oak cabinetry. In bathrooms, mixing smooth concrete with soft linen or rattan gives the space depth and soul.
Organic Textiles

Layering in texture with textiles is an easy way to soften and ground a space. Think chunky woven throws, raw-edge linen drapery, or a Moroccan wool rug underfoot. These add comfort and an organic feel—especially important in large open-concept rooms.
Architectural Detail

Arches, niches, millwork, and ceiling beams create texture through form. In our recent Barmaan Ave remodel, we used a curved wall and arched entryways to bring softness and flow, while limewashed walls added visual movement without being overpowering.
Nature-Inspired Accents

Bringing in natural elements like handmade ceramics, stone bowls, and live-edge wood accents adds a textural story rooted in the earth. These are the small moments that make a home feel layered and lived-in, not overly designed.
